Good news for parents trying to help their children with autism achieve a better quality of life the natural way.
A powerful anti-cancer substance that occurs naturally in broccoli and cauliflower could make a significant contribution to improving health outcomes for autistic men and boys.
Research published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that the antioxidant sulforaphane, is able to reverse many of the most common symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Sulforaphane has been shown to be able to significantly improve social interaction and verbal communication in men and boys with PAS. It can also reduce hyperactivity, irritability and other symptoms of PAS.
A study conducted on 44 men between the ages of 13 and 27 found that after 18 weeks of taking a sulforaphane-rich broccoli extract, more than half of the men showed significant improvements in health. Behavioral abnormalities also decreased significantly, as did lipid peroxidation and neuronal inflammation. Antioxidant capacity, glutathione synthesis and oxidative phosphorylation were improved in them.
Sulforaphane in broccoli sprouts regulates cellular health, energy production and detoxification.
Depending on their weight, the men and boys were given either 232 mg (for those weighing 100 pounds or less), 464 mg (101 to 199 pounds), or 696 mg (more than 200 pounds) of broccoli extract daily. These doses are difficult to obtain by eating broccoli sprouts, but many dietary supplement manufacturers offer capsules containing concentrated amounts of extract in this range, or even higher.
When PAS patients stopped taking sulforaphane, their symptoms returned.
For sulforaphane to work, PAS patients must continue taking it. One month after the study participants stopped taking sulforaphane, a new 22-week trial occurred. It was found that most of the improvements in health had disappeared. The researchers say this change only strengthens their conclusion that sulforaphane was directly responsible for the positive changes observed.
The researchers say that sulforaphane likely activates the Nrf2 factor, reducing inflammation in the brain and promoting greater antioxidant protection. Sulforaphane is an antioxidant with no negative side effects, which means it may only help children with PAS. Parents don’t have to worry about harming their children in any way.
