Carnosine: Natural dietary supplement may prevent the onset of chronic diseases

A natural dietary supplement can prevent chronic diseases. A natural dietary supplement, carnosine, is being tested in volunteers in an effort to prevent modern diseases, including diabetes. If the testing is successful, treatment with this supplement may be an inexpensive and safe way to prevent lifestyle-related diseases.

“Chronic disease is on the rise, and it’s a consequence of lifestyle changes over the last 100 years,” said Professor Barbara de Courten, head of research at Monash University.” So this particular supplement, carnosine, has huge potential.”

Carnosine and its precursor, beta-alanine, are most commonly sold as dietary supplements for improving exercise performance.

However, thousands of animal and cell studies have been conducted looking at shtions on the wide range of benefits of carnosine, especially due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. These studies have shown benefits mainly in the prevention and treatment of chronic age-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, cancer, and slowing aging.

Carnosine is a molecule naturally occurring in the body in skeletal muscle and heart muscle, and in small amounts in the brain.

The human body requires 500-3500mg of carnosine to achieve the necessary biological effects, but we only get 50-250mg daily through diet.

A pilot study on volunteers showed that carnosine was as effective as weaker diabetes drugs, inspiring researchers to do more extensive research.

Associate Prof. de Courten says, “We are now working on longer-term studies to confirm this and at the same time to look at other risk factors for chronic disease.”

Dozens of volunteers will be involved in the larger research in Melbourne, including those who take metformin or have pre-diabetes.

People who are overweight or obese are also eligible.

One of the willing volunteers is Chris Morrison, 54, who has a predisposition to chronic disease. He was involved in a study that involved taking six capsules of carnosine a day. He says it’s an added benefit that this supplement is natural and completely safe to take.

More funding is also needed to validate other potential benefits, such as therapy for peripheral artery disease.
