Fitness Halm: Myths and facts about holiday eating

[button : interested : interested : CM218]

For most people, the holidays are the moment when they start to feel like they have bottomless stomachs. Of course, who would want to starve when there are all sorts of goodies “lurking” around?

Is it even possible to not eat during the holidays and not suffer? I know a few people who eat only what they have during the holidays and claim that they don’t suffer. I also know a few “living containers” and they don’t even gain weight. Then there’s the group of those who are encased in layers of fat all the time, but they’re pretty cheerful lumps. My opinion is to be happy and healthy. If you gain some of those pounds but have a lot of fun with your family, that’s perfectly fine.

Let’s break down a few of the claims:

1. If I don’t eat meat, just salad and cookies I won’t gain weight.

Realize that the body needs more energy to process protein. So eating cookies and salad won’t save you. Lean meats, or salmon that has healthy fats are not a threat to you and besides, muscles need protein. (Everyone has muscles, a reference for those who would argue that they don’t have any.)

2. Potatoes/potato salad make you fat.

Potatoes are not a problem, neither are peas and carrots. Some athletes eat potatoes even on a diet, but the problem is mayonnaise. If you replace it with a lighter version, such as from Greek yogurt, the body will be pleased.

3. Fried carp is healthy because it is fish.

Nothing fried is healthy, even though almost everyone likes it. Either you grill it or use a hot air fryer where you don’t have to use a drop of oil.

4. Raw cookies don’t make you fat.

Raw brownies are delicious, healthy, but since they usually have nuts and coconut fat as the main ingredients, they are heavy and definitely calorie-heavy. Your gallbladder will weep if you have a problem with it. The advantage is that you eat one or two cookies and you have enough, your digestion will be burdened for long hours.

5. If I have a little of each meal, it’s better than eating two big meals.

What matters is your energy expenditure and intake. So if you have a craving for everything, it’s fine to have a small portion gradually of everything, although digestion will not be hastened.

6. Alcohol is a lesser evil than sweets.

Whatever alcohol you drink is bad for the body in every way. Alcohol is empty calories and by creating unstable sugar levels in the body, you will also get hungry and hence start to binge. If you cut up a fresh pineapple or apple and drizzle it with good quality chocolate, you will do much better.

7. If I’m eating, it doesn’t matter if I have something extra.

It never matters, because if you get sick, you may get worse. Stop while there’s still time and have an herbal tea. That food will be there tomorrow too.

8. When I eat Christmas food I get fat, even if I go for a walk.

It depends on what foods you eat (how they are prepared) because everyone has a different metabolism. The good news is that the more you move, the better you get. I’m not saying you won’t gain weight, but you can’t go wrong.

9. Everything I’m offered, I have to have.

If you really like something, then have it accordingly, but definitely don’t force feed everything to yourself, If you have trouble controlling yourself, have a boiled egg 30 min before your visit.

10. If I eat three times as much, it won’t save me if I exercise for an hour.

It will be saved depending on your metabolism, how much you eat and a single hour of exercise won’t make up for it, but the good news is that regular exercise will definitely help.
