Multiple sclerosis: taking carnosine positively affects fatigue in patients with this diagnosis.

Sclerosis multiplex (SM) or multiple cerebrospinal sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system with an uncertain prognosis and limited treatment. The nerve fibers that conduct signals throughout the body are encased in a protective sheath – myelin, which the body considers its enemy. Through the immune system attacking itself, the myelin is disrupted(demyelinating lesions) with subsequent impairment of nerve signal transmission.

The result is an unpredictable disease of many faces with clinical symptoms such as visual disturbances, heightverbal impairment, problems with walking, balance and coordination of movements, difficulty urinating, pain, or facial nerve paralysis. Symptoms of SM also include impaired memory, concentration, emotional lability and significant fatigue, which significantly affects patients’ quality of life.

It appears that carnosine supplementation in SM patients could be beneficial in reducing fatigue syndrome.

This fact is evidenced by an open preliminary study conducted at the University of Novi Sad, the results of which were published in autumn 2019. They administered carnosine to multiple sclerosis patients and assessed how it changes their overall fatigue level.

The conclusions showed that taking carnosine demonstrably reduced the patients’ overall fatigue compared to a control group in which the patients did not take carnosine.
