Try a pre-Christmas detox

We are all looking forward to a festive feast

Finally we can indulge in everything our throats can handle, remorse goes by the wayside. After the New Year, the fridges are traditionally filled with healthy products and the fitness centres are filled with hard-working exercisers for a few weeks. Prepare for this period now and try a pre-Christmas detox!

If you deal with excess pounds every year after Christmas, you can get rid of some in advance and give yourself a little head start. What’s more, you’ll cleanse your body and individual organs, replenish vitamins and minerals, even kick-start your metabolism and digestion!

We have prepared a 4-week plan for you to detoxify not only your body but also your mind before the holidays.

Week 1

Use the beginning of the Advent season to gradually overhaul your diet. To make sure the changes aren’t too drastic for your body, take it slowly and carefully. First, eliminate all foods that are a burden on digestion and that, despite their caloric value, do not benefit the body. This can include fried foods that are high in fat and raise cholesterol levels. Try giving up sweets for a while. If you like sweet tea or coffee, replace sugar with honey. Also watch out for hidden sugars in baked goods and food additives (ketchup, sauces, convenience foods). Your kidneys and liver will appreciate abstinence from alcohol, of which there will be plenty at Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations. Are you a smoker? It won’t hurt if you try to limit this vice too.

Week 2

The second week will be more challenging for all coffee lovers. Although its smell and taste are irresistible, try replacing it with another life-enhancer. For example, green tea, soluble drinks made from chicory roots, mace or guarana will do you the same service. Also, until the holidays, hold off on eating pork specialities and replace them with poultry and lean beef. Instead, add green vegetables (broccoli, spinach, peas) and fruit juices, which contain vitamin C and other valuable ingredients, to your diet.

Week 3

Give yourself time to mentally prepare. The end of the year is also a time of stress and busyness, which is not good for the body. So plan activities for the third week that will make you happy, slow you down and enjoy the run-up to Christmas. Ideal activities include trips to the countryside, evenings with a book that you don’t have time for during the year, or meeting friends at the Christmas markets.

Week 4

The last week is ideal for getting into the Christmas spirit at home. Tidy up what still needs to be done, finish off the last tin of gingerbread and get out all the decorations. But the main thing is still to enjoy the atmosphere and, above all, don’t force yourself to do anything. After all, there will be Christmas even without a perfectly tidy apartment.
