Because there is an opinion that they hurt only older people. However, this is not true – it is the musculoskeletal system that gives us the first clue as to whether we are looking after our health and fitness properly. So why does pain also affect recreational athletes ?
The basic reason is the aging just mentioned. The joints and musculoskeletal system wear out, and none of us can avoid this process. It is the most common non-inflammatory degenerative disease – osteoarthritis, which affects all major joints; i.e. back, knees, wrists and hip joints. Statistics say it doesn’t just affect older people – up to 3% of 25-year-olds struggle with it too. In the 65+ category, it’s up to 70%. Preventing the onset and development of this disease can only be done with proper care. This includes, in particular, nutrition and a lifestyle that does not damage them excessively.
So what do we mean by the right nutrition and lifestyle for healthy joints and musculoskeletal system? If you are trying to keep your physical activity to a minimum, or if you regularly indulge in physically demanding sports, know that neither extreme is the right one. Excessive activity, or passivity on the contrary, is bad for your joints. The golden mean applies in this case too. There are sports that help keep them moving and healthy, and keep you fit overall. Swimming, yoga, cycling or brisk walking, for example, are all suitable. The musculoskeletal system and joints do not particularly benefit from long periods of standing. This is certainly familiar to those who are already suffering from ailments.
A proper diet should include fish (omega 3-fatty acids) and foods rich in collagen (meat broths, goose fat), selenium (eggs, wholemeal bread). However, vitamin C and antioxidants are also indispensable. It is these that help to alleviate the progression of arthritis and its symptoms. A mix of effective antioxidants can be found in our dietary supplement Carnosine EXTRA. It contains up to six active ingredients that protect the body from free radicals and thus help slow down the aging process. In addition, they suppress inflammatory processes in the body, which joints often suffer from.
