Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, considered one of the most powerful antioxidants in the world. Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater microalgae known as the richest natural source of astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant with a distinctive orange-red colour. It is this natural pigment that gives animals such as salmon, prawns and lobsters their characteristic colouring.
Antioxidants are substances that protect cells from damage caused by free radicals – unstable molecules produced during metabolism. Although free radicals have a role to play in the body (for example, they help the immune system fight viruses and bacteria), in excess they can damage and destroy healthy cells.
