Antioxidants : do you know their real meaning?

The word antioxidants is being used more and more in the context of a healthy lifestyle. It is true that they are irreplaceable for the human body. Their deficiency can cause many health disorders. They also play an important role in weight loss and have an impact on ageing.

Oxygen is responsible for many essential processes and reactions in the body. However, its metabolism also generates free radicals that damage cells. The body can react with illness, often of an even more serious nature. So how can we protect ourselves effectively? The solution comes from taking in enough antioxidants.

Antioxidants and free radicals

The body itself can eliminate free radicals. However, they also enter it from the outside environment through polluted air, cigarette smoke and UV radiation. Antioxidants neutralise the effects of free radicals and prevent their negative impact on the body’s cells. Otherwise, cells can become damaged, which can impair their health and functionality. Long-term exposure to free radicals leads to serious health risks and diseases.

Antioxidants and their sources

The sources of antioxidants are quite varied. They are most commonly found in fruits and vegetables, but can also be found in other foods. Accordingly, they can be divided into three categories : vitamins, minerals and other phytoconstituents.

Vitamins

The most effective antioxidants are vitamins A, C, E and carotenoids. The good news is that several of them are represented in a single fruit or vegetable. In order to get the maximum amount into your body, you should not cook them, or steam them only slightly.

Where to find them:

Fruits- peaches, apricots, strawberries, red berries (especially currants), citrus fruits, yellow melon, mangoes, nuts, seeds
vegetables – carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, leafy greens, spinach
Minerals and trace elements

Selenium, flavonoids and polyphenols fall into this category. They are found in fish, red meat, whole grains and cereals, eggs, also in herbs such as thyme and oregano.

If you want to provide your body with perfect protection against free radicals, you can also take antioxidants in the form of dietary supplements.
